I would like to end this Quixotic month with a portrait of the creator of this phenomenon, but recently (since 1950) none of the available portraits are considered authentic.
This is the portrait attributed to Juan de Jáuregui.

Juan de Jáuregui
1583- 1641)

Juan Martínez de Jáuregui y Aguilar was a Spanish poet, scholar and painter in the Siglo de Oro.

Portrait of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra commonly said to be that which, according to the prologue to Cervantes' "Exemplary Novels", was painted by Juan de Jáuregui. Modern scholarship does not accept this, or any other graphic representation of Cervantes, to be authentic, nor is there any documentation for Jáuregui having painted this portrait.

Honoré Daumier
(1808 - 1879)

Honoré-Victorin Daumier  was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870. He earned a living producing caricatures and cartoons in newspapers and periodicals such as La Caricature and Le Charivari, for which he became well known in his lifetime and is still remembered today. He was a republican democrat (working class liberal), who satirized and lampooned the monarchy, politicians, the judiciary, lawyers, the bourgeoisie, as well as his countrymen and human nature in general.

 Gustave Doré
(1832 - 1883)

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré was a French printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature, especially those for the Vulgate Bible and Dante's Divine Comedy. These achieved great international success, and he became renowned for printmaking, although his role was normally as the designer only; at the height of his career some 40 block-cutters were employed to cut his drawings onto the wooden printing blocks, usually also signing the image.

This carefully staged tableau was among the most widely admired Victorian photographs. Price self-consciously sought to elevate the still-new medium to the level of "high art" by emulating the ambitious literary subjects, expressive gestures, and period details of grand history painting. Although this approach was largely overshadowed in subsequent years by one that championed qualities unique to photographic vision, theatrical staging has found renewed relevance in the work of many contemporary artists.
