Joaquim Rodrigo
(1912–1997)


 

Joaquim José Rodrigo was a Portuguese forestry engineer and painter. Self-taught, who came to painting late, from 1951 onwards, he exhibited an incipient expressionism in Gerais, free from commitments to neo-realist aesthetics. From 1954 until the end of the decade he developed and defined a painting with a rigorous geometric awareness, greatly influenced by Mondrian.
The year 1961, however, marked a new change in his career, curiously coinciding with the American pop art movement and a new emerging figuration in Europe, of which he could not have been aware. He practiced “raw art” for five years, a practice of fixing reality in symbolic terms, of everyday experience or traveled memory.

José Escada
(1934–1980)

 

José Jorge da Silva Escada was a Portuguese visual artist and painter.
With a brief career, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 46, José Escada's work was the subject of a retrospective exhibition in 1980 at the National Society of Fine Arts, and in 2016 at the Caloust Gulbenkian Museum - Modern Collection (José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Center).
On June 9, 1993, he was posthumously awarded the rank of Commander of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada

João Hogan
(1914–1988)

 

João Manuel Navarro Hogan was a Portuguese painter and printmaker.
Mainly a landscape painter, his style can be considered as neo-figurative although his synthesis of forms leads a considerable abstract approach to nature depiction. He employed a bold style, often using strong shades of green, browns and grey, in producing mainly urban landscapes, as well as abstract still-life work. His landscapes were always meditative and silent with an "earthy" feeling within it (often only one quarter of the painting is occupied by the sky) using for example in his preparatory studies close-up photographs of particular rocks that would later form mountains or rocky landscapes.

Luís Mário [de Sousa] Azevedo de Noronha [e Meneses] da Costa GOIH  was a Portuguese visual artist and painter.
He studied architecture at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He exhibited solo for the first time in 1962 (Lisbon, Paris, Munich); in 1966 he exhibited at the Salão de Maio, SNBA, Lisbon, and the following year he held a solo exhibition at Galeria Quadrante, Lisbon. In 1969 he participated in the São Paulo Biennial and was awarded the Soquil Prize for his performance in the 1968-69 season.

Fernando José Neves de Azevedo was a Portuguese painter.
He graduated from the António Arroio School of Decorative Arts, in Lisbon. He then enrolled at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, which he ended up abandoning. He exhibited for the first time in 1943, with Marcelino Vespeira and Júlio Pomar. He followed the beginning of the neorealist movement in 1945-46, but the following year he co-founded the Lisbon Surrealist Group (a movement with objectives contrasting with those of neorealism); In 1949 he participated in the group's first and only exhibition, which disbanded shortly afterwards. In 1952 he was one of the three participants in the important exhibition held at Casa Jalco, Lisbon, which the artists dedicated to the precursor of surrealism in Portugal, António Pedro. "An exhibition of «oil, photography, gouache, drawing, concealment, collage, linoleum» composed of three «First Solo Exhibitions» by Fernando de Azevedo, Fernando de Lemos and Vespeira".

Aurélia de Sousa

Maria Aurélia Martins de Souza, known as Aurélia de Sousa, was a Portuguese-Chilean painter. She was the sister of the painter Sofia Martins de Souza and aunt of the painter and art collector Marta Ortigão Sampaio, original owner of the collection exhibited at the Casa-Museu Marta Ortigão Sampaio in Porto.
 

She was born in Valparaíso, Chile, the fourth of seven children to Portuguese emigrants António Martins de Sousa and Olinda Peres. The family lived in Brazil and Chile before moving back to Porto, Portugal in 1869, when she was three years old. They lived in the Quinta de China near the Douro River in a home bought by her father before he died in 1874, when she was eight years old.

Augusto Gomes

Augusto de Oliveira Gomes or just Augusto Gomes, was a Portuguese painter and teacher. He completed the General High School Course at Liceu Rodrigues de Freitas, Porto (finished in 1927). That year he enrolled in the Preparatory Course at the Porto School of Fine Arts and, later, in the Painting course, which he finished in 1941 and where he was a student of José de Brito, Acácio Lino and Joaquim Lopes.[1] Between the 1920s and 1930s he exhibited with the group +Além. After completing his course at the Porto School of Fine Arts, he dedicated himself to teaching, having taught at several schools (industrial schools in Bragança, Viana do Castelo and Viseu; Escola Faria Guimarães, Porto; Marquês de Pombal, Lisbon).

José Sobral de Almada Negreiros, usually known as Almada Negreiros, was a Portuguese artist. He was born in the colony of Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe, the son of a Portuguese father, António Lobo de Almada Negreiros, and a Santomean mother, Elvira Freire Sobral. Besides literature and painting, Almada developed ballet choreographies, and worked on tapestry, engraving, murals, caricature, mosaic, azulejo and stained glass.

Sarah Affonso, the art name used by Sara Sancha Afonso, (1899–1983) was a Portuguese artist and illustrator who was brought up in the Minho Region in the north of the country. Adopting a modernist style, she painted scenes of rural life in her childhood province and portraits of peasant women. Although she exhibited in Paris in the late 1920s, her most important paintings date from the 1930s. She was largely forgotten until her work was presented in 2019 at Lisbon's Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.

Eduardo Viana
(1881–1967)

 

Eduardo Afonso Viana was a Portuguese painter. He was one of the members of the first modern generation in Portuguese painting, like Amadeo de Souza Cardoso and Almada Negreiros. He was more conservative in his approach to modern painting. The best examples of his assimilation of the modern styles in his work appears in the paintings he did in 1916, due to the influence of both Robert Delaunay and Sonia Delaunay, who he befriended during their presence in Portugal. He latter followed the post-impressionist style inspired by Cézanne in some of his best paintings. He's represented in some of the best Portuguese museums, like Chiado Museum, in Lisbon, and the National Museum Soares dos Reis, in Porto.

Abel Manta
(1888–1982)

Abel Manta was an architect, painter, designer, and Portuguese cartoonist.
Between 1908 and 1915 Manta attended the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, completing the course in painting, having won the third Prize of the National Society of Fine Arts.
In 1919 he went to Paris participating in the "Salon de la Société Nationale" among other galleries, having also attended the course of engraving with William Schlumberger. While there he met his wife, the Portuguese artist Clementina Carneiro de Moura.

Malhoa was, with Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, the leading name in Portuguese naturalist painting in the second half of the 19th century. He often painted popular scenes and subjects, like his two most famous paintings: The Drunks (1907) and Fado (1910). He always remained faithful to the naturalist style, but in some of his works there are impressionist influences, as in his Autumn (1918), that can be considered an "impressionist exercise".

José Ferreira Chaves

José Ferreira Chaves CvSE was a Portuguese painter of the 19th century.
He did not pursue an artistic career professionally, entering the bureaucracy, as an employee in the Secretariat of the Lisbon City Council, where he rose from Aspirant to 3rd Officer, 2nd Officer and 1st Officer, until, in 1890, he was appointed Director-General of the Treasury Services.
He managed to harmonize his official life with his artistic tendencies, where he achieved high and honorable mentions. He dedicated himself especially to flower painting, still life and portraiture. He was a member of the Sociedade Promotora de Belas Artes, in whose exhibitions he almost always participated, winning several medals. At the Porto International Exhibition in 1865, he received an Honorable Mention, and at another Exhibition in the same city, a Gold Medal.[1] On October 27, 1868, he was named Academician of Merit of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Lisbon, being elected Vice-President in 1894 and successively reelected in several years.
