Emma Ciardi 

(1879 - 1933)

 

Emma Ciardi was an Italian painter. Ciardi was born in Venice. Following in the footsteps of her father Guglielmo and brother Beppe, Emma Ciardi began painting as an adolescent and exhibited for the first time in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, and at the Promotrice in Turin; in 1903 she participated in the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte di Venezia and took part in it almost every year after that until 1932. In addition to her landscapes and views of Venice, she also soon made a name for herself with neo-18th-century subjects which were particularly well received by the English and American public.

Raffaele Mainella was an Italian painter. The son, grandson and great-grandson of painters, Raffaelle Mainella was trained at the Istituto di Belle Arti in Naples before transferring to the Accademia in Venice. Early in his career Mainella worked mainly as a painter in oils, with a particular preference was for views of Venice and its surroundings. But after a few years he decided to devote himself to watercolour, a medium in which he was highly regarded by his contemporaries.

<i>Charles Calderon was born in Paris. He stayed in Paris and went on to study art at the Beaux-Arts Academie under Alexander Cabanel (1823-1889) who was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and taught there until his death in 1889. Calderon clearly loved painting views of Venice as the vast majority of his paintings are of this wonderful place. Indeed many of his works were titled, “The Grand Canal of Venice”, but unlike many other artists, he does not seem to repeat his subjects. His style is influenced by that of Felix Ziem. His colours are always bolder and brushwork is always vibrant. </I>

Thomas Moran

Thomas Moran was an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School in New York whose work often featured the Rocky Mountains. Moran and his family, wife Mary Nimmo Moran and daughter Ruth took residence in New York where he obtained work as an artist. He was a younger brother of the noted marine artist Edward Moran, with whom he shared a studio. A talented illustrator and exquisite colorist, Thomas Moran was hired as an illustrator at Scribner's Monthly. During the late 1860s, he was appointed the chief illustrator for the magazine, a position that helped him launch his career as one of the premier painters of the American landscape, in particular, the American West.
